Salisbury Steak

Updated: Dec 2

A childhood favorite of mine that I wasn't sure my family would like or how I would make it gluten free for my middle son. Well, I did some research, combined multiple recipes, tested tested and tested again and finally found the most amazing and delicious recipe that is FAMILY approved!

For a short video on how to prep this meal, check out my YouTube channel: https://youtube.com/shorts/YsLkvbAkRS0

Salisbury Steak Ingredients (I always double the recipe)

Steaks: 1 lb ground beef/ground turkey

1/3 cup bread crumbs (we use ground up tortilla chips) 1 lg egg

1 tsp onion powder

2 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp salt 2 Tbsp olive oil

Gravy: 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil, if needed

½ onion, sliced 2 garlic cloves, minced

8 ounces sliced mushrooms (we skip these)

2 Tbsp unsalted butter

2 Tbsp all purpose flour (we use gluten free)

1 ½ cups beef broth

1 Tbsp ketchup

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

salt and pepper to taste

Directions

In a large bowl, combine the ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, onion powder, garlic powder and salt.

Form into 5 patties about ¾ inch thick.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add the steaks and cook until golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes on each side. (Steaks do not need to be fully cooked at this time.) Remove steaks to a plate and set aside.

Gravy:

Add chopped onions to the skillet, season with salt and pepper, and cook until partly translucent, 3 to 4 minutes. (If the skillet needs a little more oil, add it now.) Add in garlic and mushrooms and cook until golden, about 3 to 5 minutes.

Turn down the heat to medium, add the butter and stir to melt. Add flour and whisk until combined with the butter. Gradually pour in the beef broth, whisking continuously then add in the ketchup and Worcestershire sauce.

Bring to a simmer and add steaks back to the skillet. Cover and cook for 5 minutes, flip and cover with gravy and cook for another 5 minutes or until steaks are cooked through. If you notice the gravy getting too thick, add more beef broth or water.

Serve Salisbury steaks with gravy on top over mashed potatoes, noodles or veggies.

Enjoy!
